How IPL Facials Works

Intense pulsed light or IPL is bursts of broadband light delivered to deep layers of skin, where it creates beneficial change at a molecular level. IPL skin rejuvenation is like laser therapies.

However, a laser focuses just one wavelength of light. IPL skin treatment uses broad spectrum light (many wavelengths). This scattered light is absorbed by unwanted pigments in skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patients with the following symptoms may notice a significant improvement in skin quality after receiving IPL photofacial treatments:

  • Prolonged exposure to direct sun-damaged skin that looks blotchy and discoloured
  • Large pores
  • Freckles
  • Wrinkles
  • Skin laxity
  • Dark blemishes
Patients might anticipate experiencing a brief, sharp surge of energy in the treated area. It feels like a small snap from a rubber band. IPL procedures are typically well tolerated and only mildly uncomfortable.

You should avoid tanning beds and intense sunlight. You should avoid using certain medications that make you more sensitive to light until you’ve spoken with your doctor beforehand. We’ll carefully go over all the information you need to have a safe, successful surgery during the initial consultation.

Prior to an IPL facial, the clinician talks with you about medications and health conditions that may impact treatment. For a short period of time before your appointment, you may be asked to avoid direct sun exposure, tanning, waxing, chemical peels, or certain medications.

Then, the treatment area is cleaned, and a cool gel is applied. You wear eye protection while the clinician moves a handheld device over skin. Treatment is not painful, but you will feel a stinging sensation as energy is dispensed.

Treatment time depends on the area of the body, but typically takes about a half hour. IPL photofacial recovery is non-traumatic. Skin may be mildly red or swollen, but those side effects resolve in a day or two.

Makeup can be worn right away, if you apply and cleanse gently. In about a week, brown pigmentation spots get darker and flake off, as other blemishes fade. Usually three to six sessions about a month apart are recommended for optimal improvement.

Just had my first appointment and I was blown away. Everyone was so fantastic and Dr. Nkole was Incredible. Other doctors have pushed my request cause of my age and he requested the tests I wanted without question. I am so relieved and beyond thankful. Honestly, I can’t imagine being a health care worker in this time and everyone was so caring. Thank you for your continued care.
